Dogs don't avoid snakes by instinct. They investigate them, and that is how most are bitten.

The course

How it works

Two sessions, one week apart. The first covers what a snake looks like. The second covers what one smells like.

Sight

We use six different live snakes across species, size, colour and sex, so your dog generalises. It learns that every snake is to be avoided, not just the one it happened to meet.

Scent

The half nobody thinks about. Most dogs are bitten investigating a smell in a bush or in long grass before they ever see the snake. Session two teaches your dog to recognise that odour and avoid it.

Get this right and your dog turns away before the snake is ever in view.

What to bringA flat collar and a standard lead, and water for your dog. No retractable leads.

Not suitable for every dog. Dogs that are reactive to strangers, or that can't be handled by a trainer away from their owner, aren't suitable for this course. If you're not sure, say so on the form and we'll work it out before you pay anything.

Reactive towards other dogs? That's fine — it won't stop your dog doing the course. Just flag it on the form so we can plan the group.

Attendance at both sessions is required. The course only works if your dog completes the sight session and the scent session. Please only book a course where you can make both dates.
